Social Media - Microcosm or Mishmash?

Sep 03, 2013 -- 2:40pm

Don't get me wrong. I LOVE social media. I probably look at Facebook 20 times a day (I know...sick,right?). Watching it as I do is a great social experiment. As I read the posts I see people who cannot for the life of themselves make a positive comment about anything! Seriously, I can post some fun story about a kid who beat cancer and so help me before it reaches 10 replies someone will post some derogatory mean statement. Who ARE these people? Do you suppose they act that way in public? I'll bet they don't.

Another fun game we play off-air is guessing how long it will take before we get an Obama rant. Now, I'm no fan of the president at all but we can't blame him for EVERYTHING can we? I'm talking about stories totally unrelated to politics and generally before we hit the 20th post we'll have someone going off on Obama.

So, when we watch social media are we really seeing the world as it is or how people who post want it to be? I wince at the posts I see from people declaring their hatred for an ex. I get squirmy when I read about people whose family life is absolute bliss and not a thing bad ever happens to them. (Reminds me of those dopey Christmas letters you get) and I really get edgy when I see the posts that say "I couldn't have had a worse day" or "Sigh, please pray for me". No explanation. Nothing else. Onle 40 posts saying "What's wrong"?  Attention seeker/Mission accomplished.

So that's my rant for today. Oh, did I mention our grandson has been accepted at Julliard?

Great writing by our own Tim Riley

Jul 23, 2013 -- 10:44am

Ever read something and say to yourself, "I wish I'd said that!". That was my reaction to this piece by our afternoon reporter Tim Riley. I have to agree that as long as race-baiting makes money for some people, racism will stay alive. This, of course, has to do with the Zimmerman case which had the racism knob turned to high volume needlesly. Hope you enjoy the read. I sure did.

Paula Deen

Jul 01, 2013 -- 4:05pm

Got an email from a listener this morning letting me know she is sick of hearing about Paula Deen. I, on the other hand, am not. I believe this entire kerfuffle says a great deal about our nation. Witness that Ms. Deen made the racial slur 30 years ago. She admitted it and gave the context in which it was used. Her sponsors dropped like flies. Such a politically incorrect thing to say! I'll grant you that but 30 years ago? Now witness Alec Baldwin's hate laced homophobic rant just a few days ago. Hear that? Crickets. Nothing. Why this double standard? A TV Chef makes an unfortunate remark 30 years ago and owns up to it. and loses millions of dollars in endorsements. A big shot liberal actor lets go a vitriolic screed about homosexuals and the only person who called him out on it was Anderson Cooper, a gay man. Stunning.  If you're from Hollywood you get a pass I guess. If you're from the south you're a racist. Even if you've put 30 years behind you. Odd.

This week's movies from Jeff Bayer

Jun 07, 2013 -- 9:27am

I really wanted The Internship to be a hit. Maybe it will by but Jeff only gives it a 1 1/2. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are two out of work guys who take an internship at Google. Apparently its not that funny and is just a long drawn out comercial for Google. Disappointing.

Other films and ratings:

Sightseers (very dark comedy) 4 1/2

Violet and Dailsy (hit women) 2 1/2

The Purge (Jeff didn't see it)

The Kings of Summer 3

Have a great weekend. See you at the movies!

After Earth?

May 31, 2013 -- 10:43am

So here's the new Will and Jaden Smith piece that's out this weekend and its being trashed unmercifully by critics. I've even seen one review that called it "the worst film ever made?" Wasn't that "Heaven's Gate?"  Even our own local movie critic, Jeff Bayer said it was hard to follow and had ridiculous premises. He gave it 2 stars out of 5. Wow!

Box Office on Monday is going to be interesting to see if these lousy reviews sink this film. I know I have no desire to see it. You?
